CHAPTER NINETEEN

The giant man swung his ax at Carl, missing him by an inch. Carl looked terrified.

"What is that?" I asked, running to Carl's side and pulling him away from the hulking warrior.

"I don't know," said Carl. "He has been following me for days. I thought that I had gotten rid of him. You have to get out of here. It's me he wants."

I smiled the most comforting smile I could manage. "I got this," I said.

I enjoyed the frown on Carl's face as he took in what I had just said. I clapped my hands together and drew out of them a fiery spear in the shape of a cartoon lightning bolt.

"What the-" said Carl, stumbling behind me.

I hurtled the flame at the warrior. It connected with the bare gap of skin between his beard and his chainmail. The warrior roared in rage, and electricity emanated out from him in all directions. One spark connected with my foot. The shock sent me to one knee.

An idea struck me.

"Eric?" I asked.

The warrior cocked his head. I had called him by his name.

"You know him?" asked Carl.

"I have heard of him," I said. "Family from the north of England?"

Carl nodded. "How did you know?"

There was no time for conversation. Eric knew his business and wasn't about to waste any time. He lunged forward toward Carl, ignoring me entirely. I swept a flame shield into existence but to no avail. Eric smashed through the shield, swatting away the fire as if it were a casual annoyance.

"I don't think its working," said Carl.

I became aware that there were faces at the window. Whenever there is a fight going on, it is never long before the kids gather. Hank counted the faces with care and then punched me. Once again, I was baffled by the little hedgehog's priorities. Here I was, about to be killed by an ancient time-traveling giant, and he was more worried about what people would think of me as I got my head sliced off.

"You might want to leave," I said to Carl.

"Never," he said.

I cringed at his misplaced chivalry.

"OK," I said. "Just don't blame me if you get burnt."

It was time to pull out the big guns. I allowed the thrill of the fire to fill my experience. I poured my mind into the fire realm and allowed the door to open as wide as it had ever been. I drew what I drew best. Forth from my palms formed a dragon. It was unlike any I had made before. Its form was long and slender, and it had a visage of such viciousness that it frightened me.

Eric stumbled back. The dragon unfurled its wings. They collided with the sides of the classroom. The roof creaked. It was going to fall in.

I commanded the dragon forward. Eric leaped at it with open arms, attempting to crush the monster. To my surprise, he was able to grab it as if it were a solid thing. I bid the dragon thrash about, and it loosed itself from his grip and flew up.
